A trip to the farm
By D.Farrell
At the last club meeting I said I would Be the steward for the Sunday 1st december, When I saw the weather forcast for the day I did wonder if any one would turn up. When I arrived at the club site (my second vist) Pat, Tom and Andy (Club Members) were already there eager to get going. I had my doubts we were going to find much as I had been sevral weeks earlier and other club members had been in-between times including andrew taylor with his tesoro with dustbin-lid coil (which he found a hammered penny with) So hopes were not very high and terenchal rain did not help !!!! But when talking to the farmer and finding out we had three fields and the woodland to detect, things started to look up and my spirits were lifted, so we split up and started detecting Pat and Tom went for the woods and the stream Andy and I went to the field which had already been detected, I set up my dfx and within 2 meters the detector beeped and said coin at 10" (the dfx has a pictorial display) so started digging a small hole which got larger and some time later I found a small pendant with a small glass front. (see pictures below)
After finding the pendant the heavens opened up and did we get a soaking or what !!! but still determined and eager i got back to it, but got nothing apart from getting wetter. Andy went home at this point and Pat, Tom and my self took shelter under some trees and showed them what I had found and asked if they had got any thing, and they only got a modern ten pence coin. The weather broke with a nice sunny spell so we decided to take a look at the other fields the first one was realy undetectable due to still having remains of pumpkins and rows of plastic on so we went to the final field which still had stubble but with a bit of effort it was detectable the first item I got was a brass/copper stud which would have been on a horses harness then a little further I got a nice size bell. Then the detector started getting erratic and kept switching off so replaced the batteries but still kept messing about so I watched Pat and Tom for a while, Then more rain Pat went back to the car and Tom and I stayed on the first field we started on but nothing so I thought I would try turning on my detector and bingo it came to life but more rain was coming so I started going up the field and then a lovely signal and a depth reading of 7" and coin picture on the display and good plus numbers so digging away finaly finding a disc with a wheel design on it and a plain flat back. A couple of bullets was the final finds of the day. (see pictures below) Thank you Tom for the pictures.
A Day In The Park
By D.Farrell
A few weeks ago Pat and Tom and myself decided we would go to one of the clubs Parkland sites so we let the relevant personel at council know where we were going and set-out. When we got to the site I was quite stunned to see how large an area we had so we decided to detect the grassed area of the site, as soon as we started I had a fairly good signal and a fair few inches pop out a pound coin, started off again and a couple more modern coins a 20p, old 10p, a couple of pennies.Tom and I started talking to one of the locals which gave us some history on the site which was rather interesting telling us about where an old house used to stand, While tom and I chatted Pat was detecting around a tree and found a few modern coins in one hole and a couple of others scatterd about. And then the first sign of an oldish coin a 1897 Victoria penny the a few feet further a rather tatty 1886 half penny. We stopped for some lunch and got talking to another local which confirmed what the first man had been talking about, So we went to the other side of the park, where the locals said the old house used stand but light was not on our side apart from a couple of shilling bits from 1960 and 61 that was about it, But now we know where to go back to next time this site we belive will give a lot more finds as we only have scratched the surface. This site we will take new members as it is such a history rich site. I will be doing a follow up to this in the new year (Jan 2008) and hope to detect some older finds.
